An eye for an eye...
Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Paanu, Amrita Sing, and other actors, Badla is quite the thriller. A stirring, and intense tale about revenge, Badla delves deep into the roots of the human psyche, drawing out the base emotions which prevail despite an urbane mindset.
The movie opens with AB coming to visit TP to talk about her case (she is accused of a murder) It is then that the cinema can be said to truly begin, for as Tapsee Paanu begins to narrate her tale, we see a rather gripping tale of betrayal, manipulation, and murder by compulsion. TP happens to be a successful strong woman until she commits the one mistake which, as she often says, has put her in her current condition, a mistake which, had she not committed, would have enabled her to live a perfect life. It is this mistake which leads her to commit many more mistakes, which spiral into an apparently never-ending situation. The first half of the movie ends with the result of the first mistake staring at her squarely in the face.
The second half appears to be a logical continuation of the first until it does not. The revelations and mind games, which involve a lot of verbal sparring, are played evenly (or so the audience is led to believe) between TP and AB which leave much to the imagination, with matters putting TP on the stand for the murder, making her the guilty party.
The mind games continue, till, an unexpected Agatha Christie-an twist leaves the audience gasping for breath at the end when even the solid character portrayed by AB appears to be who he is not.
The film ends on the lines of, 'It is not correct to always take revenge; but it also not correct to always forgive the wrongdoer'.
